If I’d have known the current install looked like this:
... I’d have replaced it a long time ago. As a bonus, now I have the Bluetooth and less chance of an electrical fire.

I don’t really like the stereo in my Jaguar but it works ok. But the fact it sticks out of the dash about 1/2 inch further than it should makes me wonder what horrors lie behind it. Someday I’ll pull it out and put in one of those shortie media receivers.

I like stock stereos, but when mine crapped out I replaced it too, nice to have Bluetooth. Did you just dig in or watch a YouTube video first?

Ha, it was aftermarket, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I bought it from Crutchfield and they included pretty good instructions. Mostly a matter of matching up wire colors. And using literally anything other than electrical tape.
In the Neon, everything on the interior comes off just by pulling on it.

I once agreed to work on a friend’s car on the side that had the problem of running and headlights not working. There was a short, and after an hour or so of trouble shooting and running wires without coming up the location of the short I decided to take a break. I got to looking at the cheapo aftermarket stereo in it with the feeling I should see what was behind it. I popped it out and found a nest of wires similar to your picture. Some of the tape from the twisted together wires had started to fall off and was shorting out the lights on the car.

Dear lord. This both makes me want to improve what a mess my truck’s wiring must be, but also makes me afraid to even look in the first place.

Reminds me of the hack job my brother did when he installed my head unit on my Neon. In my younger years I wasn’t brave enough to tackle it and my brother had done a couple installs, including on a Neon before so I trusted him with it. Years later I had some annoying intermittent issues so I pulled my head unit out to check the wiring, it was awful. Wires twisted together and wrapped with electrical tape, most of it falling off. I eventually pulled it all apart and butt spliced everything. In hindsight, should’ve soldered, butt spliced and heat shrinked but it’s still all working.
Now though I’m half tempted to mod the dash and put in a cheap double din setup since there are some shallow mounting ones out now. I just don’t feel like modifying the fascia
on my own.

I went to put a subwoofer amplifier in the Expedition I bought recently and found that the entire 4 gauge power wire it came with was held together with electrical tape between it, the fuse and the battery. And it was too short to reach the amp so they had used 16gau ge speaker wire to finish the connection. Stereo was the same.its a wonder it never caught on fire. I redid all of it.
